 if the rains of worry find me---

if each droplet of unnecessary, unfettered,
relentless, pesky thoughts

bends the curvature of my temples
and distracts the clarity of my vision,

i stop.
i remember.
i return to...

my breath;

the lighthouse beacon
that reminds me

of the impermanence of the thought
and of the permanence of presence.

those tropical birds
eat their fruit,
display their dazzling plumage,
and see no farther
than the sand of their beaches.
sunshine and fair weather are their havens.

mundanity, fear, stagnation, and utter boredom
are hidden by the layers
of perceived comfort, opulence, and security.

do not seek to be those kinds of birds.

seek to be the wandering albatross;

take to the high seas of your struggles.
fly---better even--sore
on the updrafts of adversity's waves.
welcome many shades of grey,
and host the thunderclouds of pain
under your wings.
navigate unknown obstacles
with your tail feathers.
the lightness of your perseverance
will keep you afloat,
while you eat life's freshest fish.

a higher self
is sought circumventing the vast, open ocean,
not tree-hopping on a gluttonous isle.

:::

there is a kind of embrace
rarely ever seen in human nature;

in this embrace,
one is to give up;

one is to give in,
entirely,

to the weight of all
he or she carries;

to assume irrevocable faith and support
of the other so directly.

it is the most rare and most remarkable
trust-fall.

:::

if not
for the weight of morality,

emotions and values
would disease

the meadow of justice.

:::

love is most beautiful
when all else is removed
but itself;

the sun released
from its own roundness.

:::

we do not know
if the amount of wax
beneath us

is tealight
or pillar.

all we can do---
the very best we can do---

is not burn still and fearful,
but burn brilliantly
flickering

and

dancing.

:::

let me lick your palm,
the bones in your wrist.

let wounds be bygones
while you take my salts,

and i will take
that which no longer serves you.

wave-by-wave.
wave
           by
                 wave.
